Existing school compromised by a split site. Small Victorian schoolhouse separated by residential feeder road from larger, heavily wooded site containing playing field and dilapidated temporary classrooms.
Project consolidated school onto larger single site. Phasing designed to ensure that school continued to operate throughout build. Fast track construction - 'Detail & Build' JCT Contract with Contractors Design. Morgan Carey Architects acting as planning & concept architects and Employers Agent. Extension comprises a simple propped - portal frame with low pitched roof under which a complex plan creates dynamic and interesting inside and outside spaces. The narrow plan ensures that maximum daylighting to the class bases and clerestory glazing drops light onto a sinuous corridor and library space. The classrooms are positioned to address the wooded setting and enclosure is created a curving spine wall that wraps the external play area.
