Abbots Cottages

A group of new cottages in a Purbeck village for local families at affordable rents. Built of stone, small scale and respectful of their historic context. 1997 Civic Trust Rural Housing Award. This infill housing development has been constructed at the heart of one of England's prettiest stone-built villages with exemplary sensitivity and skill. Corfe Castle is one of Dorset's most important conservation areas, an enormous tourist attraction and a popular location for holiday homes.

Abbots Cottages

The provision of affordable accommodation for local people is consequently an urgent problem - one that this scheme addresses very successfully. A traditional design solution has been implemented with commendable simplicity to create six cottages arranged in a courtyard plan. A skilled use of local stone has allowed the scheme to blend seamlessly into its environment, in no way compromising the homogenous character of the village.

Abbots Cottages

The courtyard forms a small-scale and very pleasant residential environment and the cottages themselves are well proportioned with small windows that maintain the scale of the surrounding older buildings. Age and weathering will further integrate this scheme into its remarkable architectural landscape and legal arrangements have been made to ensure that Abbots Cottages continue to provide much-needed low-cost housing for the local community. Commissioned by The Corfe Castle Charities. Completed 1997.
