Extension comprises a simple propped - portal frame with low pitched roof under which a complex plan creates dynamic and interesting inside and outside spaces. The narrow plan ensures that maximum daylighting to the classbases and clerestorey glazing drops light onto a sinuous corridor and library space. The classrooms are positioned to address the wooded setting and enclosure is created a curving spine wall that wraps the external play area.

Schools - Loders Primary School
Cramped Victorian school in low-lying West Dorset village. Narrow classrooms and high Victorian cills mean difficult teaching spaces and poor internal/external relationships. Elevated views into site from surrounding hills.
Extension decants teaching spaces into new structures and frees up the old for introverted uses such as computing and quiet areas.

The scheme comprises two structures linked to the school via a sheltered walkway. The first, closest to the school and containing two classrooms, is located immediately behind a reconstructed stone boundary wall. It has a simple, metal, lean-to roof echoing nearby outbuildings and, from the village side is concealed by the stone wall.

The second structure sits further down into the landscape and has a planted sedum roof to make it almost invisible form the landscape beyond. Both structures, intrinsically linked to the landscape through heavily glazed facades, have large roof overhangs to create sheltered shaded activity spaces.

The school has a grass roof to reduce the impact of the building when viewed from nearby hills and the external playspaces are wrapped by an earth bank, reflecting the nearby earthworks and remains of historic abbey gardens.

The school is orientated to maximise solar gain, whilst deeply recessed verandah spaces provide summer shading and shelter.
