Private Houses - Hill Close

Designed by CFA Voysey in 1896 as a country cottage and artist's studio, Hill Close is quite modest in scale with low stone tiled eaves hugging the contours of its heathland site with fabulous views of Poole Harbour and across to the Isle of Wight.

Many changes were made and extra bits added through the 20th Century.

Then a new owner with taste and high expectations inspired by the setting and enthused by the opportunity to reinstate Voysey's vision and the challenge of paying respect to one of Architecture's heroes.

The original plan has been reinstated, fireplaces replaced and 300sq m of extensions stripped away. In their place a long low lead and grass topped pavilion sits back as part of the landscape with all of its service spaces underground.

The new spaces make a lovely sunny living environment with their sliding glass walls and stone paving running out into the gardens. A fun project for a caring client.

Private Houses - Midsummer Wood

A beautiful heavily wooded sloping site in the depths of the New Forest with one large Eucalyptus removed to form a clearing. The curved plan wraps tight to the trees, sheltering against a thick stone wall with all of the living spaces opening southwards to a sunny verandah.

Private Houses - Midsummer Wood

A track threads through the wood to the top of the site where the stone wall peels away to find the evening sun and make a deep welcoming entrance porch.

A narrow passage tunnels through the massive round stone chimney to find the kitchen leading out to the protected breakfast terrace with early morning sun streaming across the valley.

As the ground falls away, the verandah becomes a balcony, then, at the east end of the curve by the owners' bedroom the decking arcs around into the branches of an old oak tree. Built by the client and finished on Midsummer Day.
