The Goods Shed

A studio ‘shop window’ that arises from the ashes of a Listed Railway Building in Wareham. Conjured by a Practice that enjoys the challenge of using robust design to fuse old and new, the shell of the 1847 Goods Shed has become their new home.
The burnt out shell of the Listed Good Shed presented complex technical and practical problems. Architectural significance of the original building had been compromised by extensive adaptation and alteration. Seen by MCA as an opportunity to express the practices architectural philosophy which celebrates both the old and new and their potential for interaction. Allowed the practice to confirm its commitment to a local regeneration through efficient land use, heritage conservation and employment creation. Met the complexities of imminent fabric failure and structural collapse was simple and robust acknowledging the buildings industrial past.
